Let's be free!
"9am, perfect! I have an hour to get ready! I'm just going to check my phone for 5 minutes" opens all apps. How many notifications did I get on Facebook? How many retweets did I get on twitter? How many likes did I get on Instagram? Oh, he's dating her AGAIN!? Why did she dyed her hair that color? Ooh! I like that recipe. Let me save that. Ooh, and that!! "oh no! it's 9:45!!! I only have 15 minutes!!!" I'm sure this sounds all too familiar to many of us. Sadly, it is for me as well. Somehow I have successfully made social media my number one. If there was an award for using social media as a procrastination device and STILL trying to verify why I'm doing it, I would have about 20 of them! Often I find myself scrolling through Tumblr for "3 minutes" and somehow that 3 minutes turns into 3 hours... and then, oh darn, It's midnight and I'm too tired for devotions. So clearly, it makes sense to get back on Tumblr for another hour, because for some reason that is far less tiring that time in God's word. One time someone asked me to compare time spent on social media compared to time in God's word for one week. I was ashamed when I thought of the countless, mindless hours I spent scrolling through pictures of people I see almost everyday, compared to time reading God's love story to US! Why is that? I truly feel like it has a lot to do with it being there 24/7 365. I figured, why not see. So, that's exactly what I am going to do. For the entire month of May I am saying "goodbye" to the little blue bird, the bodiless grey man and the brown camera that never takes a photo for itself. I will be replacing that time with God's word. The "5 minutes" I would spend scrolling through twitter or the 3 hours I would spend laughing at Vine. When I really thought about it, I am putting those things before my God, the One who spent 6 days creating the land I walk on and the waters I sail in. The One who knew me before my mother knew I existed. The One who knows my thoughts before I think them. The One who listens to my problems, and rejoices in my happiness. I am making social media my idol. And that stops the night of May 1st.

1 John 5:19-21
"We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
