But, Jesus, I'm Sinking

Have you ever had that stretch of time where everything just seemed to suck? When your grades aren't what you expected, when your plans get changed, when your life get flipped upside down and you seem to be in a free fall? That's kind of what I've felt all week. I am overwhelmed and in defeat.

My easy response would be to say, "Why, God? Why me? Why now?" But the reality is when we start to do that we take our focus off our only Peace to look at and point out everything going wrong and everything He seems to be doing wrong. We say to our God, "I know you're big, but this wave is way bigger." Our eyes go from being fixed on our Savior to being fixed on our problems. Simply put: we pull a Peter.

In Matthew 14:22-33 God calls His disciple Peter out on the water with Him. When Peter first gets out of the boat his eyes are interlocked with Jesus, trusting that He is who He says. However, in verse 30 Peter takes his faith off of Jesus, turns it into fear and puts it in the wind. I'm sure you're thinking, "How silly! He has Jesus in front of him and he's going to worry about something like the wind?! Seriously?" But don't we do the same thing?

Oh, you of little faith.

We take our eyes off the truth of His Word and all He's done for us and we put it on the lies that satan so willingly feeds us. The lies that lead to fear, anxiety, depression, low self-worth and everything in between. Let me tell you something: those things are not of Christ! God is so specific about what things are of Him, Things that are good, pure, lovely, true, just and admirable (Philippians 4:8). When we lock eyes with our Savior, we cultivate a heart of peace, dependence and obedience.

This week I needed to remind myself: the waters that seem overwhelming my God walked upon. And beyond that, He is calling me out to walk upon, not alone but in His guidance, presence and peace. Thank You, Lord. Amen. Amen.

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."
